By the numbers

In an effort to become more efficient in my weight loss goals, I have been enumerating nearly every aspect of the process. I keep it all in an spreadsheet where I keep track of weight loss (lbs/percentages/totals), BMI calculations and variances, and miles biked/walked.

I figured that a chart of daily weight loss averages over time would trend similarly to a chart of daily miles biked over time - however, I was quite surprised.


A chart of my daily weight loss average starts out predictably high and tapers off as time goes by. It is natural that I would lose more weight in a shorter amount of time at the beginning. The decline is beginning to piss me off.


The average daily cycling mileage is shown above. The line is obviously sporadic due to the uneven nature of my cycling schedule. Aside from a similar uptick in early February, the weight loss over time does not seem to be affected by the miles biked over time.

I realize that this doesn't take calorie intake into account, nor does it take into account the type of workout (few long, high-mileage rides as opposed to several short, low-mileage rides) but I would still expect to see some correlation between the two data sets. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong? Any advice on how to rejuvenate my weight loss numbers?

I suppose I could find comfort in the fact that I didn't gain any weight this week. A week with zero change in weight is frustrating on a couple of levels: first, I worry that my new work schedule will interfere with regular bike riding and cut down seriously on my cardiovascular workouts. I will likely have to spend significant portions of my Tuesday/Thursday days off on the bicycle. The missus and I will also have to be more disciplined on our nightly walks.


This weigh-in was 157.0 lbs, equal to last week's reading. I remain 12.0 pounds above my target weight.

Total weight lost: 23.0 lbs (12.78% of my body weight). At my target weight I will have lost nearly 20% of my body weight. I am currently at 65.71% of my goal.

My BMI calculation is still 25.34. My total BMI decrease is 3.71 kg/m2 At my target weight my BMI will be 23.4. At that point, new fitness goals will be set; but for now I am focusing on this goal.

A better week than last week. I got over 100 miles of riding in this week, our Burpee workout keeps getting more intense, and we've been walking more often.


This weigh-in was 157.0 lbs, down 1.5 pounds from last week's reading of 158.5 lbs. I am now 12.0 pounds above my target weight.

Total weight lost: 23.0 lbs (12.78% of my body weight). At my target weight I will have lost nearly 20% of my body weight. I am currently at 65.71% of my goal.

A new lowest weight - not too bad. I need to get back on the bike, though. Hopefully with my return to Goodyear I will be able to get some rides in to work, unless I find myself working at the Ina Road store.


This weigh-in was 158.5 lbs, down 1 pound from last week's reading of 159.5 lbs. I am now 13.5 pounds above my target weight.

Total weight lost: 21.5 lbs (11.94% of my body weight). At my target weight I will have lost nearly 20% of my body weight. I am currently at 61.43% of my goal.

My new BMI calculation is 25.58, which is a decrease of 0.16 from last reading. My total BMI decrease is 3.47 kg/m2 At my target weight my BMI will be 23.4. At that point, new fitness goals will be set; but for now I am focusing on this goal.

On Sunday I participated in the 50 kilometer leg of the Tour de Cure 2009 for the American Diabetes Association. I had been sick all week prior with some bronchial problem, so I was worried about being able to finish. The ride was no longer than those that I have routinely done recently, but I had a hard time breathing. Fortunately, I was able to power through it and get it handled. My father took the following photos...

My lungs were on fire. For some reason, they felt really, really tight.

I was glad that I took part. I plan on doing this race again next year, and hopefully many more this year.

Back to my lowest weight point. Pretty much a negligible loss, but I am a little bit pumped about it considering the fact that I was sick all damn week and the only exercise I got was the Tour de Cure ride which almost killed me. (I will post photos once my dad uploads his!) But I'm glad to be back in the 150's. Three months ago I wouldn't have thought it was possible to say that.


This weigh-in was 159.5 lbs, down half a pound from last week's reading of 160 lbs. I am now 14.5 pounds above my target weight.

Total weight lost: 20.5 lbs (11.39% of my body weight). At my target weight I will have lost nearly 20% of my body weight. I am currently at 57.14% of my goal.

My new BMI calculation is 25.74, which is a decrease of 0.08 from last reading. My total BMI decrease is 3.31 kg/m2 At my target weight my BMI will be 23.4. At that point, new fitness goals will be set; but for now I am focusing on this goal.

A little slip backwards. I've got to get myself to a point where my conditioning and health plan aren't adversely affected by problems in my personal life. The good news, however, is that this week was only a small setback and I'm still past the 20-lbs-lost mark.


This weigh-in was 160.0 lbs, up half a pound from last week's reading of 159.5 lbs. I am now 15.0 pounds above my target weight.

Total weight lost: 20.0 lbs (11.11% of my body weight). At my target weight I will have lost nearly 20% of my body weight. I am currently at 57.14% of my goal.

My new BMI calculation is 25.82, which is an increase of 0.08 from last reading. My total BMI decrease is 3.31 kg/m2 At my target weight my BMI will be 23.4. At that point, new fitness goals will be set; but for now I am focusing on this goal.

I am pleased to say that I logged 394.87 miles on the bike for the month of February. Had I realized that I was so close to 400 miles, I would have taken a longer ride one of those days. In any event, I was happy with what I was able to get done. Hopefully this good news will take the sting out of the inevitable bad weigh-in tomorrow.

January 2009: 302.87 miles over 29 biking days / 10.44 average per day
February 2009: 394.87 miles over 28 biking days / 14.10 average per day
