This is what disaster looks like, and it's got to stop now. Four solid weeks with weight gain. 5.6 lbs packed back on. Nearly 1 kilogram per square meter added in Body Mass. 16% setback from my goal. What a shit month I had. But I'm re-energized. It would have been worse without a 18-mile ride yesterday, and I've already had a 9-mile ride this morning (post weigh-in).

It's a new day. Good things are coming soon, and I need to get back in rhythm. I'm still 25 lbs lighter than when I began, and only 9.6 lbs heavier than my goal. It's time for me to start kicking my own ass a little bit.




This weigh-in was 154.6 lbs, up 2.2 pounds from last week's reading of 152.4 lbs. I am now 9.6 pounds above my target weight.

Total weight lost: 25.4 lbs (14.11% of my body weight). At my target weight I will have lost nearly 20% of my body weight. I am currently at 72.57% of my goal.

One of the most frustrating things about trying to get healthy is the lack of nutritional information in restaurants. Sure, one can estimate the caloric and fat contents of certain restaurant foods, but it's a crap shoot at best. Now that California mandates that nutritional information be posted in restaurants, the industry itself is shaping up:
Romano's Macaroni Grill, with four locations in the region, has managed to squeeze a whopping 880 calories out of just one salad, as the chain's menu undergoes a massive revamp under new ownership.

In June, Denny's rolled out its "Better for You" menu, which will be available at all 1,550 Denny's restaurants, including 400 in California. One of its signature items on that menu getting a calorie cut: The Grand Slam.
It's good to see that we are going to have more healthy options soon, and upcoming federal legislation, if passed, will precipitate more news like this.

Evidently I am not ready to stop tracking my calories online. Or maybe I just shouldn't have eaten out like 3 times this week. Oh well. Time to jump-start this effort once again. I am a little astounded (but pleased) that I have not exceeded the 25 kg/m2 BMI calculation, so I'm still technically in the "Normal" weight range. I should probably consider myself lucky.

I'm a bit surprised, since I didn't count calories while we were on vacation this holiday weekend. I did try to make good choices, however. Back on the calorie counting starting today.

I'm trying to think of what types of goals I will have once I hit my 145 mark. I want to tone up, but I'm not looking to bulk up - I worry that the required increase in food intake will be counterproductive. Any ideas?

This week was more than a little disappointing. Despite a total caloric deficit of 3100 and a great set of exercises yesterday, I have suffered a small setback. This ends my longest streak of 6 consecutive weeks with weight loss. Time to start a new one, I guess.

Fortunately I didn't slip under the 30-lbs mark or past the "overweight" BMI calculation.




This weigh-in was 150.0 lbs, up 1 pound from last week's reading of 149.0 lbs. I am now 5 pounds above my target weight.

Total weight lost: 30.0 lbs (16.67% of my body weight). At my target weight I will have lost nearly 20% of my body weight. I am currently at 88.57% of my goal.

My new BMI calculation is 24.21, which is an increase of 0.16 from last reading. My total BMI decrease is 5.74 kg/m2. At my target weight my BMI will be 23.4. At that point, new fitness goals will be set; but for now I am focusing on this goal.

Thank you, Wii Fit. Kerri and I borrowed the game from Kyle a while ago and I've been getting into the strength and yoga exercises. I think those have helped this week, although I really need to get back on the damn bike. In other developments, I have purchased a fancy new scale that measures within 1/5th of a pound, so the numbers won't necessarily end in tidy .5's and .0's anymore.

This weigh-in puts at 31 lbs, which is significant for me. I first broke 20 lbs in February (and again in March) so the last 10 lbs was really tough - took me twice as long to lose that 10 lbs than it took to lose that first 20, but I guess that's normal.

I also am proud to report that this week marks the 6th consecutive week that I've had a loss - my longest streak yet. The previous long was 4 straight weeks when I first began this effort.

Finally, it is worth noting that according to my newly corrected BMI numbers, I am officially in the "Normal" weight zone for any modern BMI interpretation. Finally!

I guess I screwed up on my BMI numbers because I was calculating based on the wrong figures. BMI is calculated by the following formula:

BMI = (Weight/(Height*Height))*703

So my calculation for this week, for example, was the following:

(151/(66*66))*703 = 24.37

But I'm not 5'6". I'm 5'5". So the calculation should have been:

(151/(65*65))*703 = 25.12

So what does this mean? Well, a couple of things: first, I have no self-awareness when it comes to my short stature. It also means that my BMI is over 25 - I am still technically overweight in that category. Every post I've done this year has the wrong numbers. I will fix this morning's post to reflect the correct figures, but I'm not going to change them all. Probably not, anyway.

This was an interesting week. I wasn't really able to do any planned exercise this week due to my calf pain (though I did take every chance I could to carry tires or heavy parts at work) so I was worried that I wouldn't achieve my caloric deficit goals. I did pretty well, however.

With this weigh-in, I find myself at my lowest weight since I was in High School, and only 2 lbs away from the 30 lbs lost mark. I think I've finally officially broken through the slump that I was going through since late February, when I broke the 20-lb mark. I have lost 5.5 lbs in the last three weeks, so I'm really pleased with the trend lately. Hopefully I can keep it up!

Although I am a little bit disgusted to see pictures of a more rotund me, it's nice to see that my weight loss has had such a significant impact on my appearance. This keeps me motivated!

I probably would have done better this week had it not been for the caloric orgy that took place in a San Diego Benihana's on Saturday, but progress is progress.

I wasn't able to get to riding the bike very much on vacation, but I did do some in-room step aerobics which have completely killed my legs (I thought it was just a cardio exercise?) so I won't be back on the bike until they recover a bit.


This weigh-in was 154.5 lbs, down 0.5 lbs from last week's reading of 155 lbs. I am now 9.5 pounds above my target weight.

I am happy to report that this week saw the largest amount of weight lost in three months. I am still a full pound over my lowest weight, but I've finally gained back most of the ground that I lost from my crappy two weeks earlier this month. It seems that tracking my calories using FitDay has done well for me, as I've had an average caloric deficit of 635 calories or so this week. Last week I had a deficit of about 345, so this is a better week. I don't think it would be safe or helpful to have a larger deficit than 635, so I think this should be easily sustainable.

In addition to the calorie counting, I have kept up with the exercise. I am currently on a 6-day streak of having a high intensity bike ride every morning. It's only 4.5 miles, but I continue to work on improving my time and it's a really exhilarating way to burn 250 calories.

I'm glad that I lost weight this week - another week in the red would have been tough to handle. I biked four times this week and although they were short distances, they still helped burn some calories. I have also been working to create a calorie deficit each day by keeping track of my nutrition. I really think that calories have been the missing piece to the puzzle. I've been trying to keep my diet as normal as possible to avoid falling off the wagon but it looks like more attention will need to be paid to this aspect of my life.

I've begun using FitDay.com to track calories and exercise, just to see if there is something I've missed. In this week alone I have made some changes to my diet based on the information I've been gathering using the site. For example, the differences between the Fry's bread I used to eat and the Nature's Own bread I'm eating now:

  • 75% less sodium

  • 75% less carbs

  • 250% more fiber

  • "Whole Wheat" rather than "Enriched Flour"

  • and with 50% less calories
Sure, the new stuff costs a little more, but it tastes better and it's better for me. I will continue to work towards calorie deficits by increasing my exercise and being aware of what I eat. Also, I plan on trying not to like cheesecake. We'll see.

Another week, another shitty weigh-in. I need to re-gain my momentum, but it's hard. If this were a week where I had been downing cheeseburgers, soda and ice cream every day I would understand what I did and how I got here. I'm eating the same as I always have, tried to work out a little, and it doesn't seem to be working anymore. I know that part of my problem is that I'm not exercising enough and I need to come to terms with the fact that my body will never allow me to rest - the idea that I will be able to even maintain my current weight without what seems like constant physical activity is a fantasy. My laziness has cost me two months worth of progress and that is beyond depressing.

Kerri and I have decided that we are going to make a better effort in taking our nightly walks, and I'm going to get back on the bike. I'm going to really make sure my diet is in line with what it should be, and get more exercise when I have time before and after work.

Disasterous week. I knew it wasn't going to be a good one since I haven't exercised much nor have I eaten particularly well. This really helps illustrate to me how fragile my gains really are. In one week I have managed to drop back an entire month and a half. I have already done some crunches and a one-mile run this morning to try not to feel like such a shithead. Back to work time.

Not a big loss, but I ingested a large quantity of carbohydrates over the past few days preparing for the Tour of the Tucson Mountains, so I'm not too upset.


This weigh-in was 154.0 lbs, down .5 pounds from last week's reading of 154.5 lbs. I am now 9.0 pounds above my target weight.

Total weight lost: 26 lbs (14.44% of my body weight). At my target weight I will have lost nearly 20% of my body weight. I am currently at 74.29% of my goal.

My new BMI calculation is 24.85, which is a decrease of 0.08 from last reading. My total BMI decrease is 4.20 kg/m2 At my target weight my BMI will be 23.4. At that point, new fitness goals will be set; but for now I am focusing on this goal.

So... I guess I should have trained! I competed in the 2009 Tour of the Tucson Mountains in Marana today. Until today, the longest ride I had even completed was 50 miles; I was concerned that I would have a hard time completing the course. I was also pretty worried that I would make a mistake that would cause injury to myself or another rider. The beginning was crazy - I had a very hard time finding parking, and that only added to my stress level.

Tour of the Tucson Mountains

It was a 73 mile ride (despite what the above map claims) that I finished in 4 hours, 34 minutes and 58 seconds. In order to earn a Silver medallion, I would have had to finish about 4 minutes earlier. I was at a strong enough pace to make time until my rear tire blew out on me while turning at Ajo Way. Thankfully, the fine men and women who run the Bike Patrol were not too far behind. A nice gentleman replaced my tube and got me on my way, but the event added more than 20 minutes to my time. Bad luck.

Finally finished

I was pleased that Kerri (who felt ill this entire weekend) and my dad were at the finish line to cheer me on. I was also really inspired by countless friends and family who encouraged me as well, like my mom, brother Rick, Steph, Tina and Cindy "The Hammer" Sanchez. Also there was Mr. David Herring, our friend and former High School teacher who insists I call him by his first name. I believe I am yet to do so, because it kind of seems disrespectful to him. I'm getting there.

In any event, it was a really fun ride up until the tire malfunction, and I plan to do it again next year. Hopefully I'll be ready in time for the 110-mile El Tour de Tucson in November! I think I'll train this time.

PS: MapMyFitness claims that the ride should have burned about 3000 calories or so. Here's to a good weigh-in tomorrow!

I should poison my body with alcohol every Saturday night! I actually checked the scale 5 different times to make sure it was correct. In reality, I am not stupid enough to think that I can continue with my recent diet/exercise regimen and still lose weight. This week was a gift, and I shouldn't have lost weight. I need to get more exercise in!


This weigh-in was 154.5 lbs, down 2 pounds from last week's reading of 156.5 lbs. I am now 9.5 pounds above my target weight.

Total weight lost: 25.5 lbs (14.17% of my body weight). At my target weight I will have lost nearly 20% of my body weight. I am currently at 72.86% of my goal.

...a law that was unfortunately not passed by the Arizona State Legislature this year. I would actually argue that the law not only makes cycling just as safe, but actually safer since it encourages cyclists to use side streets as opposed to larger, unsafe roads like Speedway or Golf Links Road.

A step in the right direction. I can tell that this last 11.5 pounds is going to be the hardest, by far.

By the numbers

In an effort to become more efficient in my weight loss goals, I have been enumerating nearly every aspect of the process. I keep it all in an spreadsheet where I keep track of weight loss (lbs/percentages/totals), BMI calculations and variances, and miles biked/walked.

I figured that a chart of daily weight loss averages over time would trend similarly to a chart of daily miles biked over time - however, I was quite surprised.


A chart of my daily weight loss average starts out predictably high and tapers off as time goes by. It is natural that I would lose more weight in a shorter amount of time at the beginning. The decline is beginning to piss me off.


The average daily cycling mileage is shown above. The line is obviously sporadic due to the uneven nature of my cycling schedule. Aside from a similar uptick in early February, the weight loss over time does not seem to be affected by the miles biked over time.

I realize that this doesn't take calorie intake into account, nor does it take into account the type of workout (few long, high-mileage rides as opposed to several short, low-mileage rides) but I would still expect to see some correlation between the two data sets. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong? Any advice on how to rejuvenate my weight loss numbers?

I suppose I could find comfort in the fact that I didn't gain any weight this week. A week with zero change in weight is frustrating on a couple of levels: first, I worry that my new work schedule will interfere with regular bike riding and cut down seriously on my cardiovascular workouts. I will likely have to spend significant portions of my Tuesday/Thursday days off on the bicycle. The missus and I will also have to be more disciplined on our nightly walks.


This weigh-in was 157.0 lbs, equal to last week's reading. I remain 12.0 pounds above my target weight.

Total weight lost: 23.0 lbs (12.78% of my body weight). At my target weight I will have lost nearly 20% of my body weight. I am currently at 65.71% of my goal.
